minus and plus

===

Gawd. I'm certainly not above reproach for getting my hackles raised and occasionally resorting to rudeness in online forums, but it is still surprising to me how often, when anyone speaks up and suggests being polite, for example, in disagreement or when someone screws up, his voice is immediately drowned out by a chorus shouting that This Is The Internets and That's How Things Are, or trotting out the "Serious Business" refrain in ridicule.

Um, WHY? We're no less deserving of common courtesy online than we are elsewhere. I guess it's just easier, and/or more fun, to be a dick. Whatever. The Campaign for Internets Niceness starts here.

===

I got up at 5:15 this morning and was in the office by 6:30. These days it's so light outside that I had no problem feeling awake and refreshed, which is certainly a stark contract from the winter. I think I might try this regularly, I've been pretty productive this morning. The office is quiet until about 9.

I am over certain internet communities

I find it harder to disassociate myself from the poor behavior, ignorance and meanness for sport. I'm sure that says more about me than the idjits. I feel that I should be more detached. I haven't been personally attacked on the internets in anyway that mattered in many years, but this mosquito buzzing actually bothers me more.

I used to work 7:30 to 4:00. It was nice having that quiet time in the morning and extra hour at home in the evenings.

Then "4 o'lock fire drills" became a regular occurrence. You wouldn't think a lot of accounting happens in the evenings, but it does. What time we went home was no longer based on when we came in. It was based on how big the 4:00 explosion was. So now I get here when I get here.

It was nice while it lasted.

I'm hesitant to boastfully assert that there is no 4pm fire drill in patent law, lest the universe smite me with one.

What the hell is going on at work? Is it just as crazily insane for you? Have you found this year to be absolutely cranked up YET another notch? I've already done my 40 hours this week by 10:30 - TODAY - kinda makes this work-life-culture stuff b/s, wouldn't you say?

It's calmed down a little now that the auditors are gone. At least it didn't get as bad as the past two years. The hours are down, but it's intense. Too much to do, no time to do it in.

FWIT: I don't know why that happens on online forums but yeah, I've noticed that too. There also seems to be that fine line where if you question something someone says you run the risk of being flamed. And it's not that you are necessarily attacking the person you are questioning but simply asking a question for clarity sake. Unfortunately tone can't be easily interpreted over the computer; emoticons can only do so much. Lol

Case and point: there was a poster on DP a day or two ago who was asking where to go to get a kitten for his other young cats to play with and mentioned that he was really poor so couldn't afford the fees of that other places like Humane Society etc charge for adoption.

I wanted to ask him how he would be able to afford a kitten if he was poor due to the costs of vaccination, blood work (to make sure it doesn't have FIV etc) flea care, food, litter etc but not in a snide way, just genuinely, how will you be able to? But I was worried I'd be burned at the stake. So me, gutless wonder girl that I am, said naught. Fortunately someone else raised the question though.

As for early rising - eek, getting up that early I'm sure is lovely, arguably the best part of the day and all o' that but I simply cannot function mentally before 8am. Prior to that time I am simply a java-slugging work zombie with bags under my eyes down to my knees.

I had the same thoughts about the kitten post. But that bike picture post kinda pushed me over the edge. Somebody died. People have no respect anymore.

I don't think I saw that at DP (I saw it at CNN tho). That's horrible if people were being jerks about it. I can have a warped sense of humor at times but I know when to draw the line. That's awful.

Because it's almost a completely anonymous vehicle for asshattery. It's better than driving in morning traffic. The farther people are away from being tied to events and consequences the more likely they are to be asshats "just for fun."

I just wanted to drop a note to say hi. Funny that I comment on a post by you that decry internet assholes ... :)

I was reading some happier times for me and came across this, which I thought that you might again enjoy.

Just a random post to say hello and drop off that little link.
