homeless signs that make you go hmm

A dude on the corner has this written on his today:

WHAT YOU GIVE TO THE POOR
IS WHAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU
WHEN YOU DIE
- UNKNOWN

I've always thought that you take nothing with you when you die, so I guess that's consistent.

Maybe he was paraphrasing Proverbs ("The Lord will pay back what you give to the poor") or a similar sentiment, but I'd argue there's a cogency in the original that is missing from his besharpied version, and I currently have a requirement (one of many) that requests for my money from strangers at least be logically tractable. Maybe it was an incorrect assumption, but he looked like he wouldn't be interested in discussing the nuances of his wording.

How about "The Lord will pay back what you give to the poor...because I sure won't"

Today's moment of sanctimonious liberalism...

If he's homeless, there's a reasonable chance he's mentally ill, which means there's a reasonable chance that you're making fun of someone who's mentally incapable of self-care and who's been failed by the system.

Just something to think about, if you're interested in thinking about it.

Granted, but my thoughts about the wording on the sign would be the same regardless of the mental status of the person holding it.

Actually, as signs held by the homeless go, I thought it was a fine sign. A worthwhile reminder that we will be judged in the Afterlife (if there is one) by our generosity and compassion.

Now, if someone's going to just take my money and buy Wild Turkey, well, forget them. ;)

The underlying message of the sign wasn't really the point.
