maybe she flew

I walked by a motorized wheelchair on an empty downtown street this morning.

Cushion, small blanket, and fresh raindrops on the seat. Occupant nowhere in sight.

At first I wanted to take this as a sign of hope, of victory, but then I noticed that it had no footrests. So now I'm unsettled.

Cynical interpretation: One of the local beggars isn't really handicapped, but uses the wheelchair as a prop to get more donations, and is currently "off-duty."

Practical interpretation: Wheelchairs get trashed, too, and maybe somebody was amused in picking it out of the trash and using it as a fun pastime, and lost interest.

Compassionate interpretation: Um... I'm sure there's a good one, but I'm not feeling creative right now.

It looked like it was in good shape, but who knows. Used ones go for a few hundred, so if it's operational, I doubt someone would leave it behind intentionally.

One non-abduction scenario I thought of is that the batteries were dead and the only friend who could come and help the owner didn't have a vehicle that could fit the thing.

It was a set up. Chris Hansen from Dateline NBC would have popped up and asked you what you were doing. ;)

The abandoned wheelchair looked like it was at least 18 years old, honest!

I've seen a few abandoned wheelchairs lately. Maybe there's something going on that they're not telling us about.

odd coincidence...

This reminds me of a play I wrote in college... An angry, abstract thing, in which one of the characters who was bound to a wheelchair actually flew away at the end of the play.

Re: odd coincidence...

Haha! Perhaps. Though it may be a a stretch to call any of my plays art.
