Halloween 2009

My Halloween costume this year was Calvin ...

So, I decided on this kinda late, in terms of growing out enough hair to really pull it off. Maybe another year!

Costume:

This wasn't too hard. I opted to hand-stripe a simple red t-shirt with a Sharpie and a straight edge, for a "cartoony" feel. I found a pair of cheap black jeans and cuffed the bottoms up, and wore a pair of black Chucks.

Props:

Really only one is needed: Hobbes. I ... um ... was pretty lazy in this department, having found a Pez that kind of looks like Hobbes as an inanimate doll, and figuring that I could switch to my hand puppet if I needed to interact with him.

The Whole Shebang:

Overall, I'm rating this 2 stars out of 5. I always seem to forget that I shouldn't bleach my eyebrows when I lighten my hair, because they disappear and it looks freaky. I would like to have had a better Hobbes, whether it would have been making my own doll, or having bribed Nic to dress up as Hobbes ...

Also, cartoon characters are outlined in black, and usually highly caricatured, both challenging characteristics to emulate in a costume in order to make the character recognizable. Maybe I should have played around with some black outlining on my features.

One cool thing is that if I decide not to do Calvin again, I can instead make my hair stringy, add a blue blanket, and go as Linus.

Back to the drawing board!

birthday girl

It was Nicole's birthday last Saturday, we celebrated with a few friends.

Nic and I got to spend most of the afternoon together after she worked a couple hours at a health fair, then met some friends for cocktails at Moloko Plus, followed by dinner at one of her favorite restaurants, Lovely Hula Hands, and then cake and more cocktails at our place.
