Friday afternoon, one of my bosses and I snuck out of work early to catch a matinee of SKY CAPTAIN. I enjoyed it for the stylization and imagery, but several times I could have sworn I was watching Phantom Menace, Lord of the Rings, or Jurassic Park, and I'm still trying to decide if this was intentional or not. I liked it ok, I might go catch it again when it hits the pub theatres.
Friday night, I met some old high school friends and watched the Brainwaves improv comedy troupe at the Tribe Theatre in Chinatown. To be honest, I didn't expect much going in, but afterwards my cheeks were hurting from having laughed so much during the performance. Also ran in to about_to_rain there.
Saturday night, CGF and I went to see 33 Fainting Spells' performance of "Our Little Sunbeam" at PCPA. I knew the group was primarily a dance ensemble, but Our Little Sunbeam was more like a play - actually, it was a weird juxtaposition of Chekhov's IVANOV and the US Space Program, employing video, dance, some tricky sound effects, stuffed owls, helium, and much breaking the 4th wall. Crazily enough, it worked, and really well ... the undisputable highlight was Anna's death.
Tonight, I went to a BBQ at a friend's house by the Chapman School and watched the swifts (for my non-PDX friends, watching a bunch of birds flying into a chimney is the kind of thing we do here for fun). There were only a few thousand tonight, which sounds like a lot, but not when compared to last year (probably about 15, 20 thousand). Unfortunately, either I had too much wine, or I couldn't figure out how to make my camera behave at correctly capturing the sky at dusk (likely both), because the pics I took sucked.
CGF loaned me her DVD copy of HERO, which doesn't have Engrish subtitles, so I'm going to watch that in a bit. Um ... not because my Mandarin is that good (she's only succeeded in teaching me how to say "hello," "good night," and "give me all of your money" (long story)), but we saw it in the theatre last week and I want to see how much of the story I can remember. Plus, it's a freakin' beautiful movie.
