Watching a lot of movies lately. This was last night's viewing.

Intriguing but disappointing. Some freaky subject matter, but that wasn't it (actually, that's what kept me intrigued). Rather, the film was a huge visual letdown compared with Terry Gilliam's others, and this plot and story (and even the speech by Gilliam that directly preceded the film, advising that "this is a world through the eyes of a child") absolutely begged for it. The theme, if there was one, seemed to be that resorting to insanity is sometimes the only way to deal with insane circumstances ... but even on what you'd think would be familiar ground for Gilliam, this also fell short: the needle on the protagonist's character arc barely seemed to budge as events progressed.
