land ho

My Evidence prof liked to tell us that knowledge is like an island, the perimeter of which represents that which we don't know -- so the bigger your island, the more you don't know. I like to think my island is bigger, and that my perimeter is smaller, than they actually are. I don't know which parent or distant relative I inherited this trait from, but I'm reminded of it in myself, for example every time I hang out with one of my sisters, who has also, unfortunately, inherited it.

One of my resolutions this year is to familiarize myself with the perimeter of my island -- and when estimating the island's size, err on the side of smaller.

Another of my resolutions is to reclaim some more land.
