yik

I had such plans yesterday afternoon, maybe get outside and cull my apple trees, check the irrigation system, maybe even go for a little run, etc., but they were cooked right out of me. We broke 100 in Portland, and at 11pm it was still in the 90s. I'm not complaining about the heat -- it gets this hot maybe 5 days a year here -- I'm complaining about my reaction to it. I get exhausted and cranky, and then can't sleep. I wish it was as easy as turning a few fans on after cooling off in the shower, but it ain't. I was too exhausted to install the window A/C unit I bought a couple years ago expressly for this purpose.

This morning I'm bleary and grouchy, and looking at a weather forecast of an even higher triple digit afternoon. I think I may spend the entire weekend submerged in the Sandy.

Kick down a few bucks and pay someone to install the AC for you?

Be thankful we don't have a lot of humidity. We just got back from Mexico and the heat/humidity combo was MUCH worse than anything we get here.

In a 10pm burst of energy, I went down to the basement, got the ac unit, struggled it upstairs knocking over god knows what. Got it in the windows and installed it maybe 1/2 of a percent better than they did in the Seinfeld episode. But boy was I glad I did.

So get on that old man!

Of course, me installing my AC unit magically creates fall-like weather for the next 3 weeks.

I get the same way. And I haven't installed the window a/c unit. It's out in the garage. Ugh. Another hot day today. Last night at 10 pm, I went over to a swimming pool which helped.

this is now two days in a row where i have got shit for sleep due to the heat. my apartment does not have the right type of window to install a A/C unit so my roommate and i just have fans running all over the place. her cat's are laying around melting and we're not doing much better.

sandy sound like a good idea, but i may try to find a pool as muddy water and bacteria don't sound like too much fun.

I've got a pool that I can't use because the complex has a rule against swimming alone. Want to come over? I'm in the Mt. Tabor area.

what a silly rule.

i appreciate the offer but there was an impromptu cocktail party with above ground pool got rounded up. are you suffering from the heat too and need a swim partner?

my windows can't take an a/c, or i would have bought one earlier this summer when this happened.

we have fans, the attic fan, and these amazing neck wraps purchased at the lavender festival. they are comprised of 4 channels which each have 3 or 4 crystals in it - rock salt size. i don't know what they are, but they are filled with awesome. to start, you immerse them for 2 hours, then let them hang for an hour. then apply. the crystals expand the channels (or themselves?) and are cold. they stay cold for days. warming can be remedied by 15 minutes in water, then back on the neck (or where ever you want it). i would have killed people without this strange little item.

stress is almost a pleasant distraction from the heat, in the not-sleeping department.

I had planned to spend some quality time with my laptop, my knitting, and a good book down at Pix on Division in the nice A/C. Only getting there means riding my bike, and it's too damn hot.

There's also a pool right here in the apartment complex, but it's against the rules to swim alone. Want to come over?

I hope it cools down before you get to Austin. We've had 100+ days for something like 40 days in a row this summer!

Good point -- maybe I'll acclimatize before then? Plus I had a rough day at work, and in Austin I'll be on vacation. :)

Honestly I feel better when I get out for a run in this weather. It sucks ass at first, then you start to sweat and it starts feeling good. Just make sure you hydrate well after (and pre-hydrating helps a ton).

Well, it looks like the grouchy will continue through the weekend then, as we're supposed to have 100+ days today and tomorrow. :P

Maybe you could just sit in the backyard shade with a hose sprinkler?

I'm thinking about that.
