"a proper goodbye for a war criminal"

Muntader al-Zaidi, a 28-year-old Iraqi correspondent for al-Baghdadia, hurled both his shoes at the US president when he appeared at a news conference yesterday.

"This is a gift from the Iraqis: this is the farewell kiss, you dog," he shouted. "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

Most important of all, the attack has inspired more people on the internet to quote Austin Powers since about 1998.

Precisely my first thought as well, I'm so unoriginal.

I'm really surprised how slow the secret service was to re-act there. I mean the guy had time to take off his other shoe and lob it before it looks like a member of the press pulled him down.

Maybe they wanted the president to get hit by the shoes? I mean... would you have stopped the guy? I probably wouldn't. And I might have laughed. I'm SO GLAD I'm not a SS agent!

Maybe they thought it was funny. Looks like Bush broke into a little grin after the first one went by.

They were probably trying to stop laughing.

I know, I know, hahaha, but seriously, it's their job and they did a pretty awful job of it.

Yeah but so did Bush, so they're cool with it.

yeah, I had the same thought. Had to be some political constraints there. I wonder what the jurisdiction of the SS is on foreign soil - they're a domestic agency, I believe. Either way, half-assed job.

I think the cultural reaction to this has been interesting, too. Most of the posts I see are haha-throwing shoes, but that's about as serious an insult as you can get in the Arab world. I think how this reporter is treated will be a true test of Iraqi democracy.

thank you

And perhaps it was such a unique case the SS didn't quite know how to react? But I'd think their training would tell them to treat it as a serious threat to the Presiden'ts safety and consider the shoe-thrower as dangerous and potentially armed?

Maybe I only think of such things because I'm slightly fascinated by security, especially on the diplomatic level.

And I think you're very correct in this being a telling case as to the relative health of the Iraqi democracy.

Were there even any SS in the room? If so, I don't know if you can consider them slow to react unless you know where they were positioned, how many obstacles there were between them and the thrower, etc.

Re: thank you

There were, you can see them at the end of the full video clip. There's always security with the President.

Secret Service FAIL!

Our Secret Service are weak, Saddham's secret police would have hanged, drawn and quartered this guy, and raped his wife and daughters before shooting them in the head in the public square before the 2nd shoe hit the ground.

Bush is ~such~ an ineffective war criminal. It's embarassing, really.

Haha.

Too bad he missed.

Yeah, Austin Powers thing.

Though, I'm a little impressed at Bush's reflexes. I mean that he didn't OVER-react, just avoided the shoe and then came back up. Then didn't flinch at the second one.

Re: Once Upon a Time...

The best goddamned part was he collected them all & announced that if you came to the gate and had a matching shoe, you could get the one you threw back.
I am not lying. I swear.
